Jazz Festival launches Novus

This March, join us in Edinburgh - at the St Bride's Centre and the Jazz Bar - for the mini-festival series Novus showcasing some of the most inventive artists on the Scottish scene.

From Western and Indian classical music to Scottish traditional music and contemporary styles like hip hop, the unifying theme among these artists is their innovative approach to blending traditional forms with contemporary influences. Novus provides a platform where musical boundaries are explored and is a testament to the power of music as a universal language.

From the well-known faces of Phil Bancroft, Colin Steele and David Bowden, to new names like Kai Reesu, Sekoya and Diljeet Kaur Bachu, Novus provides a platform where musical boundaries are explored, and we hope you join us on the journey. Highlights include:

Kai Reesu [Fri 21 Mar, 8.15-10pm]

Inspired by video game music, hip-hop beat makingand the greats of 70s jazz fusion, Kai Reesu aims to forge a new space between jazz and hip hop. At its core is the trio interplay of Paul Copeland (keys), Robert McArthur (bass), & Matt Jim Sim (drums) enhanced by heavyweight horn section (Michael Butcher, Adam Jackson and Harry Weir) and Alex Palmer (percussion). 

Diljeet Kaur Bhachu | Simone Seales [Fri 21 Mar, 6-7.40pm]

Cellist Simone Seales combinetechnical brilliance with a captivating emotional depth. With a powerful sense of play and improvisation, they use classical and avant-garde cello techniques to create a sound that explores the full range of human emotion, making each note feel personal and profound.

Glasgow-based artist, poet and activist Diljeet Kaur Bhachu performs music from her debut album Double Lives, a richly textured journey through hypnotic layers of flute, electronics, poetry and Hindustani vocals. The songs focus on ideas of ‘selves’ – past selves, fragmented selves, whole selves, and possible alternative selvesreflecting on her relationship with herself, with her ancestry and heritage, and her experiences growing up in the Indian diaspora. 

Comaro Trio [Fri 21 Mar, 6-7pm]

Colin Steele, Martin Kershaw and Ross Milligan - three titans of the Scottish jazz scene who come together to create thrilling and joyful music, blending beautiful original folk-tinged tunes with an expansive feel and a dynamic creative energy. Featuring a rare combination of saxophone, guitar and trumpet this powerhouse trio present new music with a spontaneous edge.
